Streamline – PDF

Streamline is a practical book to help you create healthy systems in your church. Each chapter in this book gives you the guidance and action steps you need. You’ll get real tools to help you plan, organize and lead your church.

You are confident of your calling. You are leading a church with an important mission. You have a carefully worded vision statement, a set of core values, and leaders who say they want to make it happen.

But does it feel like you’re not making any real progress? Does
it feel like you’re stuck solving the same problems over and over again? Does it seem that you’re always talking about potential, or tomorrow, or after the next hire?

After twenty years in ministry, I’ve learned passion isn’t enough.

You can have a clear mission, but without organization you won’t get everyone moving in the right direction. You can preach the vision, but if you don’t have a clear path ready for people, your vision talk will be just talk.

I bet you don’t have a mission problem, or a facility problem, or even a volunteer problem. I know it’s trendy to talk multi-site, and popular to run a 40-day campaign. New service times, new programs, and new websites are like candy that captures attention in the checkout aisle.

But it’s likely these aren’t the issues holding you back. You can start new services and hire a branding company to create a new website, and in three years from now you’ll likely be in the same place.

That’s because you’re knee deep in a system problem.

I’ve spoken to pastors struggling to get off the ground and pastors leading churches on the fastest growing lists. I’ve spoken to hundreds of church leaders about what’s working and what’s not working in their churches. And I’ve seen firsthand what can happen when systems, strategies, and tools intersect with a Spirit-led congregation.

Better preaching and more vision won’t solve all the problems in your church. Systems problems can only be solved by creating and implementing healthy systems.

This book is divided into three sections, each containing a number of small chapters.

  • In Section 1, we will talk about calendars and planning. Many of the steps in this book are built on these fundamental ideas.
  • In Section 2, we will talk about organizing and aligning your leaders. You’ll find helpful steps whether you have a large staff or a small team, or whether your staff consists of full- time employees or mostly volunteers.
  • In Section 3, we will turn our attention to communication, both internal and external. You’ll see how many of these steps intersect with the calendar.

Each chapter contains one insanely practical action step that will help you organize everything in your church.
